Meet Our Swim Coach

Meet Swim Coach Andrea

Nationality: Belgian

Living in The Netherlands since: 2019
Languages: French, English, Dutch & Spanish
Pool location: Rotterdam

Profile:

I started swimming at age five, making it my primary sport until I turned 18. Although I was invited to join a competitive swim team, I chose to keep competition and swimming separate to enjoy the sport. After taking a break during my bachelor’s degree in the Netherlands, I resumed swimming during my gap year and now I swim weekly to maintain my fitness and passion for the water.

While tutoring academically, I was inspired to explore swimming coaching. This opportunity allows me to combine my love for swimming and my love for teaching. I believe that teaching what you love can create a meaningful impact in others’ lives, especially in a sport like swimming that promotes health and well-being.

I recently completed my master’s degree and am currently working as a budgeting and financial reporting intern at Enviu, an impact venture studio focused on sustainability. As I navigate this new chapter, I’m exploring various career paths that align with my passion for both finance and making a difference.

Coaching style:

I empower my swimming students by giving them a sense of control over their lessons. I work closely with each student to identify areas for improvement and ask for their input before offering my guidance. By recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, I can tailor our sessions to be more effective and efficient.

I promote a growth mindset by helping swimmers understand that progress in swimming comes with practice and persistence. I celebrate small victories, such as improving a stroke or overcoming a fear, to keep them motivated and engaged in their learning journey.

Specialties:

I particularly enjoy teaching the freestyle stroke, often referred to as the front stroke.

I emphasize to my students that taking fewer, more efficient strokes can enhance their speed significantly. Stretching their arms forward and focusing on technique is far more beneficial than simply trying to complete as many strokes as possible. By instilling this understanding, I help swimmers maximize their performance in the water.

“Teach what you love, and you will make a lasting impact!“
